María says you can’t beat working in such an environment

As outsourcing steadily increases, the volume of purchases keeps growing. María Zugasti Ayerbe is purchasing manager at TESA in Spain. Her experience is that the purchasing department has become more important over the years.

“The percentage of the final product value that comes from purchases is very important, and the tasks of control and improvement have become key issues. We must select the best providers and agree not only on purchase price but also delivery dates, the size of the orders, forms of payment – in short, everything that is needed to make sure the purchases are in line with TESA’s goals.”

María says it’s vital to set out clear goals and to have a well-organized team. “My fundamental task is to manage a team of eight, to coordinate resources and talent and to keep the team informed and motivated in order to work efficiently.”

ASSA ABLOY acquired TESA in 2001 and María has been with the company since.” I got a degree in industrial engineering and started working for TESA in 1998, almost straight from having finished my senior project. I first worked in the data processing department, then in the planning department, and in 2003 I joined the purchasing department. Since 2006 I’ve been responsible for this department. The whole of my professional career has taken place at TESA, and most of it has been inside ASSA ABLOY.”

She likes her job and the people she works with every day. “It’s a highly professional team, very dynamic, plus they are a bunch of really nice people. You can’t beat working in such an environment. I love facing the new challenges this job presents, because changes take place constantly. Initiatives and improvements must be assessed as quickly as possible.”
